I started in Objective-C, moved to Swift as soon as it was ready, and have shipped production Android in Kotlin and Java along the way. I am Principal iOS Engineer and chapter lead at Jaguar Land Rover, where I set the technical direction for a flagship app, line manage the engineers and designed a career framework that other leaders have since adopted.
I care about mentoring as much as architecture. At JLR and the BBC before it that has meant line managing and supporting engineers at every level, leading code reviews, running technical interviews and building a team culture that people want to stay in, and the retention numbers at JLR back that up. Outside work I help organise NSManchester and speak there when I have something worth saying, I have been to iOSDevUK three times over the years, and I live in Manchester.

Jaguar Land Rover Principal iOS Engineer, Chapter Lead
I led the iOS chapter of around 15 engineers across the UK, China and the US, and on a greenfield brand app I defined the modular hexagonal architecture, the testing approach and the CI/CD pipeline. Before that I shipped the first Combine feature in InControl, which started the move away from RxSwift in an app with millions of users.

I worked on the Standard Media Playback SDK, which is the AVFoundation state machine behind iPlayer, Sounds and News, and everything we wrote went in under strict TDD because the BBC holds one of the most rigorous quality bars in UK software.

I rebuilt the myTC app in Swift as the only iOS developer, which meant the architecture, the CI/CD and the Fastlane setup were all mine to get right.

I built Track Your Order in the myAO app from scratch and it held a 4.9 App Store rating with a 99.9% crash free rate, and while I was there I also built the Apple Watch app and led the migration from Swift 2.3 to 3.

An iOS internship at Stryker Endoscopy in the USA is where the iOS years start, followed by Android at Tecmark. I then went back to York to finish my degree and started at Divisi Digital while I was still there, then moved on to Fabric Digital.
Away from a screen I have played guitar for over 20 years, very much as a bedroom guitarist. I run, usually 10k distances, and I train in the gym a few times a week because sitting at a desk all day has to be balanced out somehow. I like to travel when I can and I am just as happy exploring somewhere new as I am lying by the pool.
I ride a 2016 Triumph Daytona 675R. I love the TT and have been over to the Isle of Man for it more than once, and I have been out on track myself and loved every minute, and I wish I could do it more often than I do.
Sport takes up a lot of the rest. I am a Wigan lad through and through, so I go and watch Wigan Athletic and the Warriors, and I coach my son's rugby league team.
Some of what I do for fun looks a lot like work. There is a 3D printer in the house that I keep tuning and testing new materials on, and it earns its keep with practical prints. I have a growing amount of smart home automation that I keep extending, and I go to iOS conferences when I can, with iOSDevUK being the one I keep coming back to.
